January 4th we went to Philadelphia to hand out winter kits for the homeless. We ended up with 60 book bags filled with all sorts of goodness. A letter of encouragement, heat reflective blanket, 1 pair of gloves, hat, scarf, 1 pair of socks, 1 pair of hand warmers, 2 pairs of toe warmers, wet hand wipes, 6 different snacks, 2 mini bottles of water, and 2 gallon sized ziplock bags to keep items dry. Here are some photographs of some items that were given and the prep that our member Nicole Polk so kindly took care of.
What a wonderful gift it was for us to be able to do something like this. To hand out each bag to people who really needed them. It’s a harsh reminder of the need thats out there in this world and how fortunate many of us really are. To have a roof over our head and a warm bed to sleep in. To not have to worry each day where we will get our food from or to wonder if we’ll eat at all.
At one point we had run out of bags and extras that we had. A man came up to myself and Melissa asking if we had any more gloves. We weren’t able to provide a bag for everyone there unfortunately. Melissa, with out hesitation took her gloves off and handed them to this man. She then looked at my gloves realizing they would serve him better and grabbed them right off my hands to trade with him. What a beautiful thought and gesture. That’s not something anyone plans to do. Its something that happens when you’re there, in person, seeing the need. Seeing an opportunity to help. And then taking advantage of that opportunity. Walking back to our car we were pretty silent. I know we both felt good and bad knowing there’s so much more that can be done. This is why we continue on though. This is why every month this community comes together to help those in need.
