In early August, I was talking with Ryan Weimer, the founder of Magic Wheelchair, about doing a project with them for a local child. Magic Wheelchair‘s vision is all about putting smiles on the faces of children in wheelchairs by transforming these wheelchairs into “awesomeness.” Shortly after we were given Connor’s name who lives in South Jersey. He has duchenne muscular dystrophy and Autism. While he can still stand and walk for around 15 minutes at a time, he spends much of his time in a chair.
I drove down to meet with him and his family. What kind family they are and Connor has such a wonderful energy about him. After talking with him about his likes we quickly landed on the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. While I thought it might be a tough build, I was confident that our creative members could make anything happen. I knew we had to find a way because more than anything I wanted us to succeed at bringing a smile to his face and providing him with an unforgettable Halloween.
I’d like to acknowledge our team members. The time, effort, and talent that was put forth was just awesome and we’re so proud! This wouldn’t have been possible without these wonderful people; Josh & Sharon Taylor, Joshua Andress, Meg Lemieur, Jacky Deeney Chain, Al & Cathie Berry-Green and Michelle & Ben Fong.
Josh Taylor added sound effects and dimmable lighting for the engine! Amazing work!
Here we are prepping and mounting the ship to the wheelchair for the reveal!
He was excited and loved the sound effects!
After we revealed it to Connor and a few others we had him fly around the school to reveal his costume to the rest of his school!
As he turned the corner to see the school they played the Star Wars theme which was the perfect touch.
He’s a celebrity!
Connor giving us his best Han Solo! We love that his family dressed up too!
To our members who contribute monthly, thank you for making this possible. To those members who were able to give their time and talent, we’re so grateful for you. Ryan and your team at Magic Wheelchair, thank you for what you do! You’re bringing smiles to so many peoples faces! And to Connor, we love you buddy. I hope you enjoyed this journey and had an incredible Halloween!
