Emmett was born March 12th, 2013, a fourth child and the youngest in the family. Even within the first few weeks of his life, Emmett’s health condition sent him back and forth to the hospital. At four months old, he was diagnosed with a rare brain malformation called Chiari and Hydrocephalus.
Scared and heartbroken, Emmett’s parents were eager to find the answers to relieve their sweet little boy. The neurosurgeon assured them Emmett’s symptoms would go away, but by his first birthday, they had not. He woke up frequently, clutching his feet, sobbing and searching for comfort. His parents grasped at straws, searching as well. With diligent visits to eye doctors and therapists, Emmett finally learned to walk at age two. But still, he grabbed his feet in pain. When they convinced the neurosurgeon to do a spinal MRI, Emmett’s parents took home a copy for their own eyes. Once they opened the MRI, they saw the answers – and the cysts.
Emmett’s spine was filled with cysts that left untreated, can cause permanent nerve damage and paralysis.
Desperate, his parents searched found a Chiari specialist in New York who, upon seeing Emmett’s MRI, urged us to schedule surgery that month, April 29th, 2015. However, their insurance has denied the claim for Emmett’s surgery because the specialist is out of state. They are fighting for the claim and for Emmett’s care, but are running out of time. Without insurance, Emmett’s doctor’s bills will cost over $78,000.
While his parents continue to do whatever it takes, let’s help give Emmett the quality of life this beautiful, courageous little boy deserve.
